BMC Intensifies Massive Pre-Monsoon Drive, Inspects Over 32 Lakh Households in Citywide Mosquito Control Campaign

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation intensifies pre-monsoon mosquito control drive across Mumbai, inspecting over 32 lakh households, conducting extensive fogging operations, and eliminating thousands of breeding sites to prevent dengue and malaria outbreaks ahead of the monsoon season with large-scale civic coordination.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has significantly ramped up its pre-monsoon mosquito control and disease prevention operations across Mumbai, undertaking extensive inspections and fogging activities aimed at curbing the spread of vector-borne diseases ahead of the monsoon season.

According to the civic body, the Insecticide Department conducted inspections of 32,51,623 households across all 26 administrative wards between January 2026 and 27 May 2026. In the same period, fogging operations were carried out in areas surrounding 30,17,220 households as part of an intensified citywide sanitation and disease prevention drive.

Officials confirmed that a total of 22,800 area visits were conducted during this period to strengthen surveillance and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sources across the city.

During the inspection campaign, larvae of mosquitoes responsible for dengue transmission, specifically Aedes aegypti, were detected at 37,800 locations. Additionally, larvae of malaria-causing mosquitoes, identified as Anopheles stephensi, were found at 4,529 sites. All identified breeding grounds were immediately destroyed by civic response teams.

As part of preventive enforcement, inspection teams targeted common breeding sources including stagnant water in overhead storage tanks, slum water containers, plastic sheets, discarded tyres, flower pots, decorative items, coconut shells, and plastic bottles. The civic body reported the removal of 540 discarded tyres and 1,16,251 scrap items capable of accumulating stagnant water and supporting mosquito breeding.

Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has been directly reviewing the ongoing operations through field visits across both city and suburban regions. During these inspections, she has engaged with officials and sanitation personnel to evaluate ground-level challenges and assess the effectiveness of preventive measures.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation stated that more than 1,000 workers, staff members, and officers from the Insecticide Department remain continuously engaged in surveillance, inspection, and preventive action across the city. Multiple departments, including the Public Health Department and Insecticide Department, are working in coordination to carry out regular fogging, spraying operations, and elimination of breeding sites as part of sustained pre-monsoon preparedness.

The large-scale operation underscores Mumbai’s intensified civic response strategy aimed at reducing the risk of dengue and malaria outbreaks during the monsoon season through continuous monitoring and aggressive vector control measures.
